1. Industrial style: anything that screams industrial is a big deal this year…and BIG is the key word.

Tables and shelves that boast metal frames and big caster feet are all the rage! If it looks like it just came out of a warehouse after years of use than you’ve got the beat on the hottest style out there. Along with these hefty furniture pieces come large oversized and super distressed prints, metal wall art and anything large, old and used. Add some old books, reclaimed frames and unique conversation pieces and you’ve got an attractive urban chic space.   

2. Birds! It doesn’t matter whether they’re on a print or canvas, on a cute box, sitting on a shelf or carved into a candle stick…they are so popular and one of this year’s number one styles. Birds of any type, lovebirds, singing birds, roosters, chickens; any type of bird will be a hit. If you’re not a huge bird fan just try adding one small porcelain bird to your décor or a small bird bath to your yard…not quite ready to commit to a bird? Bird items like bird cages are classic and great additions to any space. With all the different styles to choose from it should very easy to find a cage to fit your style. Putting a potted plant in the cage will bring a little flair and color to your space too.

 3. Chalk Board: On EVERYTHING… from canisters, walls and cabinet fronts to small table top chalk boards that can sit on the counter or cabinet tops. Chalk boards aren’t just for kids anymore, so grab a piece of chalk and get creative!

4. Unique Furniture pieces: Every room needs excitement and an unusual or unexpected piece of furniture can really fit the bill. It doesn’t have to be the biggest piece in the room…in fact a small piece in a fun bright color can really add the punch of fun the room needs. Reclaimed wood is the trend this year, with pieces looking weathered and worn. Sofa tables, coffee tables, console tables, picking the right piece is the difficult part…with so many delightful and charming choices our best advice is to pick the piece you fall in love with…who knows you may have to re-decorate the entire room around this new found treasure.  

 5. Fun Frames:  Let this be the year that you update that photo wall! We love to display our family pictures, school pictures or pictures of important events and vacations. Updating your frames can have a big impact and trying something new like different types of frames on the same wall can really give you a fresh look. Try changing the way they are hung…maybe off a frame rod with cute ribbon?  Pictures hanging on the wall and some sitting on a floating shelf give your wall a little more dimension. Adding some non-picture items can bring some personality to your wall and give you a chance to be super creative. There is no right or wrong way when it comes to your home so pull down those old gold metal frames and spice it up a bit!

6. Words of wisdom: Signs and sayings are getting more sophisticated and creative. Brand new sayings and some old favorites have been re-invented and placed on canvas, glass, burlap or old worn wood.  These signs and sayings are bringing inspiration to all of our spaces and giving individual personality to our rooms.

7. Retro: “Everything is new again”…or at least those of us old enough to remember it can say that.
Anything previously loved is all the talk these days, from old fashion movie reels to corded telephones you can find throw backs to the things we once loved. This style can bring an eclectic group of things together and make them work. While it has been popular to have a “retro” TV or theater room, these items are making their way into the office, kitchen and main living areas as well.  This look can take a little time to build but reproductions of these once loved items make it easy to get instant gratification. So what are you waiting for…hurry before these items are old again!

Every room needs a little green, it’s softens and brings a little life to any space but “little” is the key word…it should never be the main attraction. Greenery should soften the edges and bring life to your main décor items. Topiaries are great for bringing some height and drawing your eye up, and small picks in different textures can perk up little empty spots in your décor. Look for different styles, such as succulents or grasses to give a attractive elegant look.  Think of greenery as an accent, it is there to give life to your décor.

9.Large prints or small prints in a group: Prints can be such a fun way to bring color and character and be the beginning of a great space…use its colors and style to guide you for everything else in the room. Choose paint colors and fabrics using this large piece, it guarantees that it will all work together because it works in the piece. If you love a print that is not very big try to buy several pieces in that same style and do a collage on your wall, the small pieces become one big center piece for the room.

 10.Glass: Any type of glass brings a little class! Apothecary jars are super versatile; you can leave them empty or fill them with whatever your heart desires. Every day items such as balls, greenery and candles add interest to your glass pieces. Don’t forget that the holidays can bring out real creativity when your jars can be filled with heart candies, Christmas balls or scary Halloween skulls.  Apothecary jars aren’t the only option, any type of glass is fantastic, old framed windows, flower jars, glass balls, glass cake stands. Adding glass to your décor gives it a little shine and adds a clean airy feel to your space.

Pillows in fun fall colors and blankets on the back of a chair or couch invite your guests to cozy up with a warm cup of hot chocolate or a crackling fire. 4. Candles layered in front of a mirror will bring in a soft warm glow (and everyone looks better by candle light:) 5. Placing fall flowers throughout your home will soften all surfaces and bring the outdoors in…without the chill.

Growing kids need a space that grows with them!

Rod Works has some great items and ideas that can be fun for now and continue to be useful later.

Alexis Crockett says the first tip is to choose an item to plan the kids space around, it can be a picture, a special quilt, or a loved item, basically a starting point. This item will help you decide colors and the style of the space.

It’s best not to center the space on a specific character or trendy item. It’s ok to add a couple of these accessories but if you’re looking for longevity stay away from items that will date the space. Instead find items that can be used now but as your child grows you can make a few small changes to make them last a few more years.

Remember to look at each item and ask yourself, “will this work next year or the year after?” if the answer is yes…grab it, if it’s not try to find something similar that will give you more time for your buck.

Older children need fun “make my own mark in this world” spaces…so bring items in that foster creativity, chalk board and dry erase walls are so much fun for young and older children alike. Letting your child choose some of the things in their space will also extend the life of the space, if you do it all they won’t be attached to it and will want to change it in a much shorter period of time.

In the end it should be a space you had fun putting together and they love being in!

If drawers are at a minimum consider cute baskets and a shelf for them to sit on. Hooks on the back of the bathroom door is also a great place for towels, robes or even a bathing suit.

Need clean towel storage but you don’t have cupboard space or a linen closet for them? Try a towel rack above the toilet or tub area. Towels racks can hold several clean towels, and bring a decorative element to any space.

A small array of items on the counter or in the corner of the tub also bring a personal touch and soften the hard edges of the bathroom. A clock, plants, or a makeup mirror are great

personal items that bring character to your space. If your dressing a guest bathroom remember presentation is everything! Make sure you super clean every surface, have fresh towels, and small special touches to make them feel welcome. A basket of travel sized items is always appreciated.
